What message Barack Obama’s win gives to Nepal?
Barack Obama, an unknown figure not only to the world but even within the United States until the last half a decade, has secured an impressive win to be the 44th president of the United States of America. Obama’s winning is historical in many regards. He is the first African American to be elected as a Commander in Chief of the most powerful and developed country on this planet. In a country where racism is still rampant, a black president elect was something unthinkable until fairly recently. Obama’s win has changed that entire paradigm.
There could be many direct and indirect policy level influences that may come with Obama’s presidency through out the world. Nepal will not remain aloof with such influence. While we will have to wait what kind and level of influence will come to Nepal, at this point, what is probably the most important is to recognize that social discriminatory institutions such as caste, age, race etc are meaningless to define an individual’s potentiality if appropriate education, training, and support are provided to individuals by the society. Barack Obama is the role model for many young people not only in the US but also in the countries such as Nepal. If a member of black community--which fought for basic civil rights just fifty years ago-- can make a president, it should be the aim of Nepal to provide adequate environment to ensure that a child even if born in a disadvantaged and marginalized community can aspire to be the president or prime-minister of the country. This is probably the most important lesson that Nepal can learn from Obama’s victory.
